National Day Parade 2011 Reflections

National Day Parade 2011
For the school's National Day Parade 2011, some of us, together with Aether Ma'ams, were selected to participate in it and it was to be held on the 8th of August 2011.

In preparation for the actual day, we had many extra trainings after school as a contingent and we gradually improved as the highly-anticipated day drew nearer.

As a contingent, we continued to train and worked on our arm-swings, belok, posture, rifle drills and more. Even though the trainings were tough, we persevered, hoping to do our very best to make Cedar NPCC proud. Furthermore, Aether Ma'ams never once gave up on us and continued to help us to improve on our drills. Their encouraging words and patience motivated us and kept us going.

When we had our first Uniform Groups combined rehearsal, we did not reach the expected standard set by the teachers in charge. Besides that, we also had differing standards, and different Uniform Groups did certain drills differently, especially our belok and timing. Hence, they advised us on how to improve our drills, how to standardise certain drills and posture and explained to us how important the Guard Of Honour was in the parade.

The next few combined UG rehearsals and Full Dress Rehearsal were also fruitful, as we learnt from all the mistakes we made. After countless trainings, our drills improved tremendously as compared to when we first started out. With perseverance, our efforts to synchronise our movements and drills paid off. Our hard work boiled down to the final day.

In a blink of an eye, the long-awaited day arrived, the 8th of August. We gathered in school early in the morning to prepare ourselves for the parade. We adjusted our uniform, practised some basic drills and encouraged one another. As we saw the Guest of Honour arrive, our hearts were pounding hard and we were all nervous yet excited, for it meant that the parade was about to begin. The atmosphere was intoxicating for us as it was our first National Day Parade where we would be marching.

The parade finally commenced at about 7.45am. The Red Cross Youth, Girl Guides and National Cadet Corps contingents marched out in sync and took their dressing. When the command was given by the Parade Commander for the Guard Of Honour contingent to march into the parade square, we were greeted by screams and cheers from the school cohort. That moment, we felt nervous yet excited as all attention was directed to us. Our drills were much better than before, probably due to the encouragements and cheers we received. Giving our best shot, we maintained our posture throughout the whole parade in the courtyard, did our rifle drills smartly and our bangings were loud and co-ordinated too. However, we made a few mistakes, such as when we belok-ed or took dressings, our ranks were not straight and our hormat was a little disorganised.

After it ended, we returned our rifles and changed into our quarter uniform. A sense of relief washed over us, because the parade we had been preparing for over the past month was finally over and our hard work had paid off.

All in all, although the journey was not easy, and the trainings and rehearsals were rather tough sometimes, this year's National Day Parade was an enriching and fruitful experience to us as we were given both the opportunity to march with Aether Ma'ams as a Guard Of Honour contingent, and also to do Cedar NPCC proud.

After all the trainings, we have improved on our drills and learnt from our mistakes. Definitely, when it all boils down, the journey is always more important than the destination and we have taken away so much from this experience.

Most importantly, we want to thank Aether Ma'ams and the school for giving us the chance to march in front of the whole school, and shine for Cedar NPCC. We do hope that we will be able to participate in National Day Parade'12 next year and do Cedar NPCC proud again.

On the 15th of July 2011, Cedar NPCC shooting team participated in the inter-unit .22 revolver shooting competition. We would like to applaud both shooting teams for their outstanding performance during the competition.

Passing out parade and road marshalling reflections

Passing Out Parade

On the 26th of April 2011, Cedar NPCC had the annual Passing Out Parade, which marks the stepping down of Phoenix Ma’ams and Aether Ma’ams taking over the unit.

It started at 2.30p.m., where we had a few rehearsals. The first rehearsal was held in the First Level Empty Corridor due to the unpredictable weather. We prayed for good weather so that we could have a proper Passing Out Parade in the courtyard.

Thankfully, the lightning alert finally went off and we could use the courtyard to have our second and third rehearsal. We were all delighted by this fact and promised to give our best. However, our drills were not up to standard. We failed to catch up with the unit during marching, and we anticipated the commands.

During the actual Passing Out Parade, our drills had improved as compared to the rehearsals but we were still not up to standard. While marching, our armswing was not coordinated, we dragged our feet and we did not take dressing with each other, especially when we belok-ed. We did not communicate well to ensure that everyone could catch up to the marching speed. When we did 14-1-2, we could not maintain proper dressing and we did not stop at the given point. Nonetheless, we still did some basic things well, like coordinating our bangings, maintaining our posture, locking our arms, and drills such as taat sedia and bersurai.

After the parade ended, we were introduced to our Aether NCOs. Although we were sad to have Phoenix Ma’ams step down, we looked forward to have Aether Ma’ams taking over us, and the unit.

Overall, our performance during the Passing Out Parade could have been improved. We could have done better and put in more effort to do our drills properly, and improved ourselves by having more rehearsals beforehand and ensuring that everyone of us knew what to do. We are really sorry if we’ve disappointed our Phoenix ma'ams who believed in us so much and gave us so much encouragement

POP also marks the beginning of our bond between our new NCOs. We should continue putting in effort in whatever we do in order to make all our Ma’ams proud. Athena will continue to put in our best effort and live up to the Cedar Np standard.

Road Marshalling

On the 27th of April, 33 cadets from Aether Ma’ams and Athena went for road marshalling at Road Safety Park. It was our first time doing road marshalling there and we were nervous yet excited.

When we reached, we had a briefing on what to do. We were instructed to guide the pupils in answering some questions and signing their answers before they could proceed. Some of us were appointed a station, where we were to let the primary school students who were either pedestrians, cyclists or drivers answer questions. Others were appointed at traffic crossings and we had to give them demerit points if anyone of them broke the traffic rules, such as dashing across the road without looking out for the traffic or crossing the road without using pedestrian crossings.

At times, we were approached by a large number of pupils that tested our calmness and patience. We also had to be alert at all times and look out for the students breaking the rules.

Occasionally, we were engulfed by many students asking us to help them sign their papers and felt quite overwhelmed. We took charge of the situation and asked them to line up orderly.

However, some of them were unsure of what to do and even went to the stations in the wrong order. We had to redirect them and help them. Despite us not being familiar with the routes in RSP ourselves, we still tried to offer them as much help as we could, and we learnt to be sure of our surroundings when they approached us and asked for directions to get to a certain venue.

After it ended, we reported back and went to fall in, afterwhich we marched back to the briefing room.

In conclusion, we also felt that this game is an effective way to educate children on road safety. We also felt that it was a new, different and interesting experience for us too, and the knowledge we gained would be useful for more road marshalling duties in the future.

HRC Reflection

On the 12th of February 2011, the Secondary 4 cadets from Cedar Girls’ Secondary School’s NPCC unit went for the High Ropes Challenge (HRC). We were going to the NPCC campsite in Pulau Ubin as cadets for the last time. Furthermore, it was our last outing as a squad organized by the NPCC HQ. Thus, we decided to make the most of our time during the outing.

We gathered early in the morning in our school and as we waited for our bus to transport us to the Changi Jetty. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and nervousness. Soon, we reached the jetty in Pulau Ubin. We cheered and sang our hearts out enthusiastically as we hiked our way to the campsite. Reaching the campsite got us reminiscing about the pleasant times we shared with our fellow campers during our previous two visits.

After attendance-taking, we were briefed on the safety precautions and what was going to happen that day for HRC. We wore our helmets and harnesses and were all geared up for the activities. The cadets were split into different groups and our squad was to go to the Pepper Pole first. We had to climb a tall vertical pole, balance on top of it and then, jump to grab hold of a handle bar hanging a few feet in front of us. It was not something new to us as most of us had done it last year. Thus, we found it relatively easy. We cheered for squad mates who were doing the activity and shouted words of encouragement. They really encouraged us and kept us going when we felt like just letting go. We had to believe in ourselves that we can do it in order to jump and grab the handle bar. Thus, it helped us to overcome our fear of heights and become more confident of ourselves.

Our next activity was the Dangle Duo, an activity in which we and our partners had to help each other climb something that looked like a huge rope ladder. It helped to inculcate values such as cooperation, teamwork and perseverance into us. We found this activity to be the most difficult one.

We had our lunch and our next activity after that was going through the tunnel. We had also done this before during our Survival Training Camp and thus, had no problem with it. We knew the path and found our way out rather quickly. We had to go in a second time but this time all of us in the squad had to go in together, exchange our shoes with one another and do a cheer before coming out of the tunnel.

Our last activity for the day was the much anticipated Flying Fox. It was the tallest zip line tower in Singapore. Our seniors had told us that it was a very thrilling experience. All of us were nervous yet excited as we waited for our turn to jump down. As we ascended the stairs to the top of the tower, we could feel butterflies wreaking havoc in our stomachs. We could feel the wind rushing through on our faces after letting ourselves go from the tower. As the ground was closing in on us, we could feel the adrenaline rushing through our veins. Before we knew it, it was over. We felt quite accomplished because we had done it eventually despite our fears and uncertainties.

We skipped belay school due to time constraints and were debriefed after that. Soon, it was time for dismissal. We were glad that we could go home to rest. Yet, waves of nostalgia overwhelmed us. After all, it was our last time there as cadets and we had had many pleasant memories there. We decided to capture the moment and took lots of photographs before heading home.

Despite being worn out, we cheered enthusiastically and kept our spirits high as we hiked back to jetty. The island diminished behind us when we were in our ferries and caused us to feel pangs of sadness. We reflected on what had happened on that day when we were on our ferries. HRC made us stronger, both as a squad and as individuals. We learnt to take adversities in our stride instead of letting them take over us. We had truly enjoyed ourselves on that unforgettable day. HRC is a very good experience for Secondary 4 cadets.

Annual Camp 2010 Reflections

This year’s annual camp was from 19 to 20 November, and it lasted only 2 days 1 night. On the first day, we did not fall in on time and got scolded. Furthermore, we did forget our standardization of uniform parts. Our actions we also not fast enough. We also did not standardize with Athena if we should hold our life or not, and we did not ask for permission with Athena.

Then we had lunch, camp craft 1, drills 1 and camp craft 2. For camp craft, we had orienteering and pioneering. For orienteering, we had four stations. We were not very enthusiastic, and we displayed little teamwork. For pioneering, we had to use dowel poles to create something relating to the theme AC, and come up with a story line for it. Some of the story lines were not related to the theme, and we did not involve everyone. However, we managed to claim back our campers as the stories were entertaining and made Ma’ams laugh. For drills, we forgot our static drills and we kept fidgeting. We were also not serious about it. However, our NCOs invented a fun way of keeping us engaged and to help us cut our punishments.

For lunch and dinner, we were lazy and we did not cook properly. We also did not teach Athena how to light up the solid fuel. For wash up, we did not keep within the timing and we made the area outside the toilet wet. We must take note that we have to bathe within the time limit so as not to eat into other groups’ bathing time. We must also make sure that we keep the floor outside dry or else it would be very dangerous.

For night walk, it was very fun and engaging. We all participated actively even though some of us were very scared. Some of us even pretended to scream to scare the rest.

During supper, we did not standardize the way we put our life and bottles and got scolded.

At around 3am in the morning, we had fire drill. We forgot to inform the teacher officers and we also assumed that we were supposed to gather at the place where Ma’ams were blowing the whistle. We took a very long time to assemble in the foyer. That was really disappointing for us as well as for Ma’ams, and we were very lucky that we did not get pumped.

For second day, we had assembled by 6.10am. We were early and were able to claim back our name tags. Then we had physical training. We were enthusiastic and therefore claimed back more confiscated items. After that, we had breakfast. This time, we managed to standardize how we put our things. After which, we had camp craft. We did first aid and evacuation, tent pitching, flag erection and lamp lighting. For lamp lighting and first aid, it was mostly Aether who did the answering and bandaging. We should involve Athena more. We were supposed to have drills, however, in ended up in changing parade and eventually fire drill. For our changing, it was not up to standard and our uniform parts kept getting confiscated because it was not standardized. In the midst of changing, we had fire drill. When we assembled, many people were missing and it took a while for us to request to look for them. There were also 2 casualties located behind the canteen, where the fire is. We took a very long time to find them. For future fire drills, we must ensure that everyone is present at the assembly point. We must understand that during a real fire, we cannot confirm that all of us will be at a particular place together.

After fire drill, we had drills for a while. Then we had field cooking, and the theme was underwater world. We sent representatives out to compete for extra ingredients, and at first all the volunteers were Aether. We should have let Athena tried instead.

After lunch, we had initiative games. We were not very enthusiastic and lacked team spirit again. After initiative games, we assembled in the cage to have bonding before having drills.

For drills, we did rifle drills again, and this time, Ma’am Shazreen was there. We managed to claim back two lifes by during hentak while singing songs. We should think of more creative ideas, such as this, to claim back uniform parts instead of doing corporal punishments.

Later, we had closing muster parade, followed by campfire preparation then dinner and wash up. After that, it was big sweep. We took very long to get started and had slow movements. We took longer than the given time and therefore had lesser time for mass cheering. After mass cheering, it was campfire. During the campfire, we were very enthusiastic and cheered very loudly. After campfire, Ma’ams told us that they were very proud of us. We were also very happy that we were able to make them proud and contribute to the success of the campfire.

Overall, our performance for this camp was not up to standard, and it could be improved, especially at certain areas, for example, our sense of urgency and enthusiasm during the initiative games. However, we took initiative and we helped each other. This camp certainly bonded Aether a lot.

On the 2nd September 2010, a representative from each school in Area 5 took part in the IAPB Competition 2010. We are proud to announce that our Area 5 team was awarded 3rd place in the competition.

0.22 Revolver Shooting Competition 2010

On the 9th of July 2010, Cedar NPCC shooting team took part in the inter-unit 0.22 revolver shooting competitions. We are proud to announce that both teams have achieved outstanding results.

Firstly, Cedar NPCC Unit would like to commend one and all for the hardwork and determination in making today's Swearing In-cum-Area Games Day a success.

We would like to thank Zhonghua NPCC unit for choosing our school as a venue for the Area Games Day 2010 and we apologise if there were any difficulties or problems that the organising team from Zhonghua had faced with regards to the school building and facilities.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to the other five schools in area 5 for coming down to participate and also to those who had stayed behind to clean up our school compound. We apologise that we are unable to upload the pictures now but we assure you that the pictures taken today will be up soon.

Secondly, we would like to congratulate our cadets for the perseverance and enthusiasm displayed during the activities today. Despite coming to school early to set up and organise the venue , we have evidently potrayed the Cedar Spirit by persevering through the area games day and we are proud to say that we have done well in the respective games that we particapated in, with the results as follow :
